This painting and decorating course is for school leavers looking to gain the skills necessary to seek employment within the construction industry, or for those changing careers. At this level, experience is not essential but if you do have some prior experience it would be an advantage. On this course, you will develop your practical skills in our workshops as you undertake a range of tasks, supported by the necessary theory-based classes and assignments. Our experienced industry professionals will guide and help you to develop your skills and knowledge.

You will cover the following units in practical and theory sessions:

  • 201 Carry out safe working practices in construction
  • 101 Principles of Building Construction, Information and Communication
  • 116 Erect and dismantle access equipment and working platforms
  • 117 Prepare surfaces for decoration
  • 118 Painting a flush door
  • 118 Painting a door frame/skirting/window frame
  • 118 Painting a flush wall area
  • 118 Painting a wall area with internal and external corners
  • 118 Painting a ceiling area
  • 119 Stripping/applying a wall covering to a ceiling area
  • 119 Stripping/applying/painting a wall covering to a wall area
  • 119 Application of a wall covering to wall area (internal/external corners)
  • 120 Broken colour *120 Produce a negative stencil/colour wheel.

How is the course taught?

You will be taught through a mixture of theory and practical sessions in fully equipped classrooms and workshops. You will also receive a range of video tuition and practical demonstrations

What support is available?

Our qualified tutors will support and guide you in the classrooms/workshops and through tutorials as they help you to develop the skills and techniques required in industry. Learning Support is also available for those with learning difficulties/disabilities; please let us know on application if you require this service. What social activities can I take part in?

We offer a programme of social and sports activities to all our students; full information is available from the Student Room at your centre of study. Student rooms are available for those who want to play games, meet up with friends or just chill

What facilities and resources are available?

A range of snacks, hot and cold foods are available to purchase in the canteen and café facilities, as well as vending machines. Halal meat and washing facilities are available at both centres. We have Quiet Rooms for those preferring to reflect. LRCs (libraries) are available at both centres, fully equipped with a wide range of learning materials and qualified friendly staff on hand to support you

What else should I know?

Annually we take part in a range of national and regional competitions in a wide range of subject areas for those keen to show off the skills they have gained on their courses. Competition entry is not compulsory and does not apply to all subject areas; please ask your tutor if it applies to your course.
