Who is this course for?
In partnership with the College of North West London, these courses are delivered at the Islamic College for Advanced Studies. This course is for you if you are interested in Chemistry or if you wish to pursue a degree course later on. This course is normally studied in addition to other A-Level courses.

What are the entry requirements?
You will need at least 5 GCSE grades A*-C (including grade B or above in Chemistry). In addition, as part of the interview process, you may be required to sit subject specific, English and maths assessments.

After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.

  • Minimum Literacy Level: Level 2

  • Minimum Numeracy Level: Level 2

What qualification will I receive?
GCE AS Level in Chemistry.

Where can it lead?
This course can lead to progression in studying Chemistry at A2 Level. It may also count towards your UCAS points.

What will I study?
You will acquire the knowledge and understanding of the fundamental chemistry concepts in order to explain many different aspects of contemporary chemistry, such as climate change, green chemistry, pharmaceuticals and chemistry research. This will include:

Unit 1: The Core Principles of Chemistry

a. Formulae, equations and amounts of substance
b. Energetics
c. Atomic structure and the periodic table
d. Bonding
e. Introductory organic chemistry

Unit 2: Application of Core Principles of Chemistry

a. Shapes of molecules and ions
b. Intermediate bonding and bond polarity
c. Intermolecular forces
d. Redox
e. The periodic table — groups 2 and 7
f. Kinetics
g. Chemical equilibria
h. Organic chemistry
i. Mechanisms
j. Mass spectra and IR
k. Green chemistry

Unit 3: Chemistry Laboratory Skills

This unit contains practical assessments that cover the content of Units 1 and 2.

The practical assessments cover the areas of physical, organic and inorganic chemistry. The types of practicals that students must
complete are qualitative observations, quantitative measurements and preparations.

How will I be taught?
You will learn through lectures, classwork, practical work in a laboratory, individual tutorials as well as personal study.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through practical laboratory work as well as written examinations during the year.

Students aged between 16-18 will be charged a £20 resource fee, plus material courses if applicable.

On income-based benefit? You could study for only £30.
